๐ Big Changes Ahead: What UK Learners & New Drivers Need to Know in 2025โ2026
A friendly update from KL Driver Training, Swindon
Learning to drive is an exciting milestone, and at KL Driver Training in Swindon, weโre committed to helping every learner feel confident, prepared, and safe on the road. With several major changes coming to the UK driving test system โ plus new safety proposals for young drivers โ we want to make sure our learners and their families stay fully informed.
Hereโs a clear, friendly breakdown of whatโs changing and what it could mean for you.
๐ Confirmed DVSA Driving Test Changes (2025โ2026)
๐ Longer Notice Period for Changing or Cancelling Tests
From 8 April 2025, learners will need to give 10 full working daysโ notice to change or cancel their driving test without losing the fee.
This is a big shift from the previous 3โday rule and is designed to reduce lastโminute cancellations and free up more test slots โ something especially helpful for busy test centres like Swindon.
๐ฃ๏ธ More Time on Faster & Rural Roads
From 24 November 2025, the practical test will include more time on rural roads and higherโspeed routes.
Here in Swindon, that means learners may see more test routes using surrounding Aโroads and countryside lanes.
๐งญ Permanent Test Route Adjustments
Following successful trials, the DVSA is making several changes permanent, including:
- More independent driving
- More realistic, everyday routes
- Fewer emergency stops to allow more time on higherโspeed roads
๐ Learners Must Book Their Own Test
From spring 2026, only learners โ not instructors โ will be able to book driving tests.
This aims to prevent blockโbooking and make the system fairer for everyone, including those using the Swindon test centre.
๐ฆ Proposed YoungโDriver Safety Measures (Under Consultation)
Alongside the confirmed DVSA updates, the Government is considering several new rules aimed at reducing collisions among newly qualified drivers. These are not yet law, but they are being actively discussed.
โณ 1. A Mandatory 6โMonth Minimum Learning Period
Learners may soon need to complete at least six months of practice after passing their theory test before taking the practical test.
At KL Driver Training in Swindon, we already encourage steady, consistent practice โ so this proposal aligns well with our teaching approach.
๐ซ 2. Passenger Restrictions for New Drivers Under 20
A key proposal is a sixโmonth restriction on carrying passengers aged 25 or under for newly qualified drivers who are under 20.
โ ๏ธ 3. Six Penalty Points for Breaking Passenger Rules
If these restrictions become law, breaking them could result in six penalty points, which would revoke a new driverโs licence under the New Driver Act.
๐งญ What This Means for Learners & Parents in Swindon
โ More structured learning
A minimum learning period encourages steady, consistent practice โ something we already support at KL Driver Training.
โ Safer early driving
Passenger restrictions have been shown to reduce accidents among young drivers in other countries.
โ Betterโprepared test candidates
With more time on rural and highโspeed roads around Swindon, learners will be more confident and capable when they pass.
โ Fairer access to test slots
Learners booking their own tests should help reduce waiting times at the Swindon test centre.
